People are so resistant to spend the money to buy a proper feeder and practice simple bio security measures that do not cost a lot of money. Why? The money spent in the process pays for itself with feed savings and the chickens are safer as well as the flock owner.
Money is hard to come by, everyone gets that, but they roll the dice with disaster without thinking of the cost it they get sick or even die. The survey that BYC put up a few weeks back showed that around 8% of the flock owners on BYC have a treadle feeder, showing there are a lot of potential customers out there and a lot of potential victims, far more than 92% as a lot of the treadle feeders sold are useless when it comes to stopping rodents.
Great info on the risks, this needs pinned in the predator and pests forum.
