Feed the chickens... feed the peacock.... wait, what?

So this morning I open the door to toss my coffee filter out (where it dries, and the grounds become part of the soil and the dry paper goes in the trash) and see .... a peacock! So, I go back in like it's an everyday occurrence, get some corn for the chickens and make clucking sounds at the peacock, toss him some corn, and some for my chickens..... the peacock eats his corn so this is starting out well.

Hm, so I have a peacock around. I'm surprised to see one and especially where he was, behind my coop under the tree I have my Scary Motorcycle Cover (tm) attached to, which does a dandy job of catching the wind and looking and sounding, frankly, scary as hell. I'm amazed it doesn't bother the chickens, and apparently, doesn't phase a peacock either.

No one really knows who owns the peacocks/hens in this area, they're just kind of around. I suppose if we have pheasants and turkeys, might as well have the odd peacock.

Wow I wish we had free roaming animals here. I would give them all a good home!

There was a house for sale down the road that had free-living peafowl camped in the front yard and all over the roof. We saw three boys and four or five hens, just wandering around casual as you please. There were some shipping crates set up as nest boxes, so it looks as if when the people moved out, they figured that the peas could fend for themselves . . . .

Well, they were right: they're doing fine. We can hear the boys whooping it up most evenings; it sets our own off, and what a racket! Maybe the one that you've attracted is looking for a new territory. If he likes the food and the company, you might just have yourself a new bird!

Good luck!

I think they're cool, and there are a couple I think, that are considering this place. I know this because I was kneeling down and clucking at one at the front of our place and I heard one caw back by my trailer.

If the land owner doesn't like them, I'll have to chase 'em off though. I'll ask him about it tomorrow. I have this "thing" about our geese, they REALLY annoy me. But, I don't mind a rooster crowing 10' from my bed. Peacocks can really "sing" but so far it's not annoying to me. The land owner may have a similar "thing" about peacocks and if he does, I'll have to keep 'em chased off.
