I am a fairly new chicken person and I thought my chickens were pecking vents a few months ago. I saw a few doing it and then recently, I realized that they had a pretty good mite infestation going. Have feather loss around vents and signs of mites at the base of the feathers there.
Am making progress by cleaning out coop and using neem on perches and poultry dust on chickens.
I hate to use chemical dust, but need to get it under control at this point. I had been giving wood ashes baths all winter but apparently this was not enough.

After researching I started using garlic today as powder in the food and free feeding the chopped raw. ( They loved the raw by the way). I also started 1 TBS cider vinegar in the water. Doing this for future prevention and overall good health. ( I am learning from others)

I wondered about making a spray to go right on the chickens with diluted neem, and some raw garlic or powdered. Perhaps just a bit of vinegar. Or maybe just the diluted neem. I use neem all the time on my skin and love it. I don't think it would hurt them. Not sure if the garlic is a good idea to spray on them. Has anyone tried a homeade spray that helped and is natural using neem. I have not seem it recommended to put the neem on the chicken. Just on roosts. My neem is thick so would need to use hot water or something to get it to spray on. Any ideas or things you have tried that might help?

I wondered too about spraying the coop with it, putting in just sand for a while and leaving out the pine shavings
Any ideas anyone has thought of or tried that worked?

Thanks. I guess after reading more and looking at other threads I will be bathing them a few at a time and using neem on the roosts and coop.
