I'm also on the easy side about cleaning - usually just rinse the waterers out, use my fingers to scrub til the slimy part or algaie is gone, and refill.
Maybe once every couple of months, I take the time to scrub with soap and water. Never had a disease problem in 8 years. I'm with the previous poster - if I was having disease problems I would probably get a little more scrupulous.
Same thing with my cat dishes, I don't use bleach there, and I don't bleach my own dishes, either! Soap and water are pretty effective, you can read about handwashing guidelines and you'll see how effective it can be.
