Good morning. I have been lurking for awhile, have picked up a TON of helpful information and would now like to post. I have a bunch of baby chicks that are about 9 days old. I know that I can start giving them treats at this point and I know that I need to provide grit. My question is....can the grit just go in some sort of dish? I had picked up some play sand...can that be used as grit or should I get something else? This whole journey has been soo much fun...I never knew the obsession that comes with it.

And one more question...they can have clover and dandelions out of the yard as long as they have not been sprayed correct?

I do not know how the rest of the world did it, but we got some oyster shell for them as well. We figured that they needed the calcium for strong bones and development. We mixed them both in with the food. Again the rest of the planet may have different thinking on this, but they should be able to pick up enough of what they need when eating.
Chickens are fun.

Yes, you can put it into a dish.
Some people use play sand, some people prefer construction sand saying that it comes with a variety of sized pieces.
