I am brand new to chicks and read that when they are withing their first week they should have an egg given to them. I am not sure the purpose, how often, and I am not sure if it should be cooked or raw? Thanks for the help!

(Sorry, I answered the wrong thread somehow.)

A cooked egg certainly wouldn't hurt them, and it would be a bit of a nutritional boost. It also might go a long way to making them your friend.... Probably a raw one wouldn't, either, but cooked is a little safer for them just as for us. It is an excellent source of animal protein for them -- and many chick feeds are vegetarian, which chickens are certainly not. I feed my adult flock some scrambled eggs regularly.

its one of the few things they can have without the need for grit,as flockwatcher says its a good boost for them.
dont give it every day,the chick crumble/mash they are on will be complete and am assuming to much protein ontop of that will be bad-use as a treat.

make sure to mash the egg as smooth as possible, and dont give them the shells as complete pieces; which coud get them into the habit of eating their own eggs-grind the shells completely, its good for calcium.

depending on the brooder they are in,try and keep it above the bedding [shavings? hay? etc] as they will kick everything into it and may eat the bedding as well.

our old ex batt;henny absolutely loves mashed boiled eggs-she doesnt lay eggs herself anymore but mum had made her and the chicks some to take home today, the chicks [outdoors] took some getting used to the egg as they had never seen a green dish before and had a chicken-fit at it. :p
