So I put one egg in the incubator. I know one is not a good number but, it's my first attempt at hatching any eggs out of a bator and I plan on having this chick (if it hatches) as a house chicken. It's due to hatch in 9 more days. My question is: Can the chick eat layers feed or do I need to buy chick starter? And, to medicate or not to medicate? As in medicated chick starter or non medicated. I only have 9 days, hopefully, to get the right feed.

layer feed doesn't have enough protein and has too much calcium for a young chick's body to handle.

The two feeds' nutrients are proportioned differently because they are for different purposes. The layer feed has certain ingredients and nutrients to supply the hen with egg laying materials, and the chick starter has the correct percentage of protein and other ingredients for a growing chick.
