I have read a few places of people just feeding their birds corn.
I was wondering if my birds would be fine with free choice corn?
They free range from dusk to dawn, with free choice feed.
I would be willing to lose some productivity for less expenses.
I would keep out oyster shells year round.
I can grow enough corn to last me all year.

All inputs are appreciated.
Thank you!

Our flock of 40 free range all day too. and we feed corn( a lot) as well as some pellets. The price of poultry food here in the Northeast is double what folks pay in the Midwest. We also are growing corn this year mainly for chickens and cutting and raking our own hay for winter to save a few bucks.
Our productivity is still high.

My son is thinking of growing millet/BOSS next year in the side field just for chickens.

You will get lots of opinions. I think a person has to decide what is best for them & their personal chicken experience.

I started mixing a bag of corn with a bag of feed last winter to cut costs a little. No change in productivity.....I already have eggs coming out my ears, literally can't imagine more!

Would you still offer a poultry feed, or just corn? With the free ranging (mine are confined) I don't see that it would make that much difference, cost wise, unless you get corn a lot cheaper than I do. Mine's only 2-3 $ a bag less.

Does turn the black sex link roosters' white feathers a nice gold, though!

I could grow my own corn, is why!
I might mix it first, then start increasing the amount of corn and see if I notice any changes!
Thank you all!
