i have been reading up on cornish Xs. The book I bought says food to be in front of them at all times. Other places say to restrict feeding to 12 hours to restrict overgrowth. what is right?

I don't believe there is a "right". You set your goal of growth and pick a schedule of feed that meets that goal. Last batch I restricted feed and free ranged, next batch will be in cooler weather and they will have access to feed 24/7. I do not offer light at night so they will restrict themselves to a point, however I expect faster growth due to not just feeding twice a day.
