Ok, I know young pullets should not eat layer feed, but what about my cockerel? Once all my young girls become layers I considered feeding layer feed as opposed to grow type with oyster shell on the side. Would this be bad for my cockerel who will be a rooster in October?

I've always heard it isn't healthy for the rooster. I have a friend that feeds her mixed flock ( roo and hens) layer feed and she's never had an issue. Me personally I just provide a tray of oyster shell and feed an all flock feed since I do have 5 roosters that eat with the hens. My hens eat the shells at least once a day or every other day. I think it is just up to you and your preference. I've also had pullets that have ate the shells out of curiosity and never had an issue with reproduction or growth.

I’ve similarly read that it’s not advisable. However, I have always only used layers feed for my adult flocks. My cock birds are never around for more than 1 year, so whether this is an important variable I don’t know.
