Feeding the Chickens!

I have four beautiful girls who are about 4 months old. I am hoping someone might be able to help me. I am wondering if I should keep food in their coop at all times or if I should give them a certain amount per day. Thanks!

I have a pelleted layer feed that I keep in the coop/run free choice, scratch grains on the ground in the morning when they are let out to free range for the day.

I think most healthy chickens won't gorge themselves on feed. Whereas meat birds will
