So today was Easter. We dyed 48 eggs with our natural dye made from fruit and vegetables so there are no chemicals in them. If I wanted to feed them to my chicks, do I need to peel the shells? I have always heard you don't feed the shell to the hens because they may eat their own, but what about 9 week olds? Do I have to worry about that yet? Or can I just crush the whole egg up, shell and all? Normally I just give them scrambled but since these are already cooked, no sense in wasting them! lol

I will not be giving them all 48, no worries. Some will go to the dogs!!!

Well, one thing... you can give the chickens egg shells... how old are your babies??? IT may really injure them, if they are little... if they are eating grit they can eat that! GOOD LUCK!!!!

I would think you can just break up the egg and give it to them. It shouldn't be a problem, make sure they have grit if they are eating anything other than chick food. I also give hard boiled eggs to my dogs, no harm there.

Many people feed eggs to their chickens. It's excellent for calcium. It will not injure them in any way, I was asking regarding the issue of them eating the shell and then when they begin to lay, eating their own eggs because they remember eating shells.

Why would you scrape the insides out? The yolk is healthy.

They live on sand in their run, plenty of grit. I just don't want them to start eating their own eggs because I fed them egg shells!!! Hopefully they forget about that before they start to lay.

IF the egg is cooked, it's fine, raw eggs shouldn't tbe fed, because they will eat their own eggs once they get a taste.
When I fed mine egg shells (I don't anymore because i give them oyster shell) I would bake the eggshells in the oven before I gave them to the chickens so they wouldn't associate them with regular eggshells. Definitely bake the shells first, then crunch them up - they won't devour them like the eggs, they will pick at them over a few days time.

oops sorry i guess i was wrong... i thought the hard egg shells could harm them... good to know!
I have never given eggs to my dogs but I guess that might be a good idea!!!

I grind up my egg shells in the blender to the consistancy of coarst to fine powder. I put it in a big tuna can and screw is to the wall. They eat this just fine. I have friends that save egg shells for me.
