We had to give our ducks water overnight on the mainland because it is just too hot. I put a 4 litre plastic milk cartoon just over half full of water with a cut out so they can't get in it. The shape means they can't knock it over. I put mine in the corners for extra protection. A friend of mine has a hook and a rubber band she attaches hers to.
I wish I had a magical answer for you. The ducks will bed themselves at dusk. Our daylight right now is about 7am-5pm (slowly getting lighter at night) We do not have much daylight right now. The ducks wander around all day and at dusk they just go in before I am out there.Heatwave on the mainland recently with temps 40 to 46C which is 105F to 115F. Opposite problem. We have moved here to escape the occasional inferno. Now we have 6C to 25C year round. Which is 40F to 75F. Why I didn't do it sooner!?
I know your weather though. I lived w winters like that for the first 20 years of my life. Hats off to you. It would be very challenging with animals.
Let me ask you...how to you get your ducks easily into their night time enclosure if they don't expect a little treat and water? What is your method?
Yes here are a few pics of the waterer in the hutch. https://photos.app.goo.gl/GTuWGuDrdingqe3CAHi, could you share a picture of your setup? Is it a container you fill every day? Or does it fill from a larger bucket? I'm looking for some sort of indoor waterer for my ducks at night, but they make such a mess. Hoping I can find a solution that doesn't make the inside of their coop too wet.
Ooh. That is a great idea. Not sure if I can find that exactly but should be able to get something. Perfect really..deep..can't be toppled over abd they won't sit in it and soil it. Well done!
