I'm Jenny. Mum to 6 amazing ducks.
My husband is an exotic vet nurse and 5 and a half months ago we where given a box of 5 day old Mallard ducklings to look after until the RSPCA came to collect them and take them to the wildlife centre. Their Mum had been hit by a train and a member of the public saved the ducklings and put them in her hand bag. One poor ducking lost the end of his beak trying to wake his mum up :-(
Anyway, there was a problem at the centre and we ended up having the duckings a lot longer than expected. During the following fortnight, 4 of the duckings including the one who lost the end of his beak died :-( This left us with little Meep Meep. By the time the RSPCA where able to take him a week later we weren't letting him go
We managed to get him two 3 week old female Campbells ducklings, one Khaki, one white, to keep him company.
We demolished the back garden, bought a huge dog grooming bath to work as a pond, and Duck Town was born. When the ducks grew big enough and got tired of living in our spare bedroom and walking to the bathroom for a swim they moved in.
After a while Meep Meep pair bonded with Quackers our Khaki Campbell and started to bully Marshmallow our White Campbell.
We decided to add a few more females to Duck Town to try and redress the balance. We rang around and managed to find a duck breeder who had plenty of females the same age as our ducks.
Two weeks ago we visited him and came home with three beautiful Runner Ducks. Magpie, a very chatty black and white runner, Speedy a friendly brown and white runner and Jumbo the largest grey runner I have ever seen. We took them home and put them in Duck Town, Marshmallow was made up to have some company and after a day Meep Meep took to them all really well.
The ducks are all getting on great and have started to lay eggs for me. Sadly my three runner girls have bumble foot, they came like this from the farm. I have been keeping Duck Town as clean as possible and we are cleansing their little feet twice a day. We've taken swabs to determine the best antibiotic for them and their going to my husbands work on Monday to get a vet check and get them started on antibiotics.I would really love to get them some of the duck shoes I have seen on here, to hep their little feet out.
So that's my story, the ducks have well and truly taken over my heart. I have breakfast with them every morning and they sit round my feet chatting to me In fact I've become a little obsessed, wouldn't change my new crazy duck lady status for the world though.
