Help! I always research things to death....when I had a baby, when I was moving to California, and now, when I'm getting chickens. I have read so much on all of these topics and wonder, what is the best method????? Should I try fermenting and sprouting in the summer and fall and fodder in the winter and spring? (It's getting up to 104 here this coming weekend, so it gets HOT around here.) Do each of these methods make up the majority of their diet besides grit and oyster shell (and free ranging if they can)? Should I grow my own mealworms and, if so, should they just be given as a snack or as a large part of their protein intake? Do you still supplement these methods with kitchen scraps? And finally, I have had a hard time finding exactly what the dilution of ACV in chicken water is! Sorry, I'm a scientist and I like to follow recipes! Thanks for spelling things out for me!

HI :) I'm a crazy reading/ researcher too when ever I do something new:) I have learned that when it comes to chicken raising there are many many ideas and methods. I have learned to read all with an open mind and adapt what I can into what works for my flock.

For optimal laying habits a diet of around 16% to 18% protein is optimal. Most people agree that free ranging or a chicken tractor is the best for health and production. But since that isn't always possible for everyone. A adequate sized run is fine too. You can supplement with chemical free lawn clippings, kitchen scraps, leaves in the fall, BOSS (black oil sunflower seed) etc.

Personally with my girls I free feed a layer mix (16% in spring and summer) plus Oyster shell. They get out to free range every day. In the evening when I put them away I usually toss in whatever kitchen or garden scraps I gathered that day or I toss in a couple hand fulls (about a cup for each 20 birds) of a Seed/ Meal worm mix I make myself but its primarily BOSS. Common theory is that Meal worms and things like BOSS should be used as treats/ supplements NOT THE PRIMARY source of feed.

Fermenting the feed is an awesome method. When I raise my meat chickens I always ferment their feed. I don't ferment for my laying flock simple because my Hubby and I share the nightly care of them and he just wont do the fermenting process.. LOL he isn't as dedicated as me :) I do ferment grains when I have an ill bird and in the winter when we have cold spells.

When adding ACV I add about a Tablespoon per gallon of water. For daily consumption. Here's a couple of links to some older threads about ACV.

I hope this helps a bit. Just remember its always great to learn an try new things with your flock. Sites like this one are great for learning. Read, ponder and take what works best for you and leave the rest:) You will find your own flow and method!!! Have Fun !!!!

Hi JNB! Don't know if I ever thanked you for your great advice! My chicks are doing great on fermented feed, regular feed, and kitchen scraps. I really enjoy trying new things on them and watching them grow! They are 8 weeks old now and doing GREAT! Thanks again!
