In the Brooder
Retired Navy guy here( 21 years active and 20 years retired) who always loved birds. Had Macaws, African grays and yellow heads. The Wife and I retired 4 years ago and and went traveling, 28 states and a winter in Colorado. Came back to Texas and Wife wanted to go country. Currently living in Central , North Texas.
Small little town of less then 200 people. Talked the The Wife's Aunt into a small rental with about an Acre. Next came the coop and run..Talked the Uncle out of 6 panels of 6X10 dog fencing. Long story real short. Free and used wood and one more dog run free, I now have a 10X 40 run and a 4X8 3/4 inch coop. plus a small pre made cheap two hen coop, plus I just added a 2X8 - 8 nest free standing box . I had to buy some plywood but most everything else was free to me..Figure I have about $600 in the whole deal. I bought 4 Hens and started my Flock. Had to get into Chicken math and added 6 more plus a rock red rooster. Son in law got a different job and gave me his Flock. So up to three weeks ago, I had 19 hens and Rodney the Rooster. Well chicken Math got me again. Darn Tractor Supply had chicks at 75 cent and 8 more followed me home. Went back to TS and darn if they didn't have some different chicks I didn't have. 6 More came home. Now I have 3 more chicks from my Broody Black Cochin, one of hers and two Easter eggers..So the 6&7 week old chicks number 14 and the three week old number 3. You do the math. I've got more then enough to keep my hobby time filled..
