How long after putting a rooster in with hens does it take for the eggs to become fertile?
Thanks

As soon as he does his thing...sometimes 1 day, other times it can take a while for the hens to accept a new roo.

I forgot the other part of the question, how many days after you remove the roosters will the eggs stay fertile?
We are trying to give some hens a brake before they loose to many feathers
thanks

I read the other night for quail about 11 days I am looking for a few extra hens my self sounds like your roos need another girl or 2

I have plenty of hens about 40, but only 5 roosters old enough to breed. Just thought I could give some ofthe hens a little break.
the hens with roosters not laying as many eggs as the ones without. Not sure what caused the slow down. Went from 16 eggs per day down to 11 from 19 hens. The others without the roosters are averaging about 18 eggs from 20 hens under the same conditions.

Coturnix are lovers of perpetual sameness! any changes in their immediate environment will decrease or outright stop egg production for a time of up to 1 month or so.

I don't know how long it takes a quail egg to go through the quail's internal egg laying factory. With chickens, it takes about 25 hours from start to finish. A chicken egg can only be fertilized the first 15 minutes of that process.

If a chicken rooster breeds a a hen on Monday, Monday's egg will not be fertile. Depending on the time of day the chicken rooster and hen mated on Monday and if Tuesday's egg had already started its journey, Tuesday's egg may or may not be fertile. I would not count on it. Wednesday's egg will almost certainly be fertile if the mating was successful. As Coverleaf said, not all hens may get mated the day you put a rooster in with them, whether it is chickens or quail.

This is chickens and you are talking about quail, so I don't know how much difference there is.

According to a study made by University of California, after the male is removed, the fertility is 70% up to 2 days, then drop to 40% at 6 days, 10% at 7days, and 0% at 10days.
You can see these very interresting information along with others info about quails in the booklet "Raising Chukar partidge", i guess you goggle it and you will find the PDF link
