Have used BYC as a resource for over a year now. Just finally registered. In PA with about 40-50 chickens - variety of breeds. Wanted to join the hatch-a-long contest
Saw several comments that eggs aren't fertilized yet for some. How do they know this? Just aren't seeing roosters doing their job?

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Examination of the yolks will tell you if they the hens are are being effectively fertilized or not.
These eggs are fertile.

You can clearly see the "bulls-eye" blastoderm on the yolks.
Non-fertile eggs will just have a white dot with no ring. That is a blastodisc.
