We are surrounded by crop fields. Little field mice are everywhere. Our vet says they really don’t pose a threat to the chickens, and that there’s really nothing we can do about keeping them out. He said we would need a dozen cats, and that wouldn’t make a dent in the population. Any suggestions? We can’t have Guinea Fowl, too noisy.

Your vet is right but a dog could help scare them. along with a couple of cats. Chickens like to eat mice too. Just make sure your food bins are secure, and all of your nesting boxes

If you are committed to the process set up some mouse bucket traps. It will take some time but you should be able to slow the population down. Images are from an internet search.

What do you mean by securing the nest boxes? These field mice are small, they can get through really small places. There’s really no way I can close off the nest box, without blocking the other chickens.

Is ther a way to seal them off on the outside? with a plastic sealent or chicken wire?

We’ve done something like that. But we literally have farm fields on both sides, and behind us. The vet said we really can’t do anything.
