...my chicken is lethargic and was without appetite. Yesterday I separated her from the flock and gave her a warm quiet place to rest.

Today she ate some yogurt and hard boiled egg.

I noticed she had some soft egg shell sticking out of her vent after a bowl movement. I gently tried to ease it out of her, but it would not come without force.

When I let go of the egg shell, her vent contracted and the soft egg shell went back inside. I tried to retrieve it but could not.

Thoughts?

Might she pass it on her own? Is a vet needed? I am concerned about infection.

Be very careful handling her as you don't want it to break. Set her in a very warm bath with some Epsom salt. Make sure she's about half covered in the water. Then you can lube up the area with coconut oil or another kid of natural oil. Coconut oil has antibacterial properties which will help
You can even feed her coconut oil to lube up her insides

Wonderful! I'm on it.

Also want to mention that the egg must have previously ruptured inside of her....this would explain her slimly-like, gooy bowl movements.

Only the soft egg shell is left.

Tips for preventing this in the future? I read about liquid Calcium?

What I did for one of my hands he was consistently Lane soft shelled eggs is to give her scrambled eggs with the show Mixtown just cracked the whole egg in the pan and scramble it up and feed it to her
