HI,
My name is Patrick Finn. I live in Southern California in a gated horse community. I have wanted to own chickens for several years and I finally convinced my wife since her father is now retired and he wants to be able to help take care of them. It has been 8 weeks now since receiving the baby chickens and boy do they grow fast! We have 28 and all but 6 are different breeds. 2 are the same breed because I accidentally picked 2 of the same breed and 4 are the same breed because they were not sexed so I wanted to make sure I received at least 1 female out of the 4. These 4 are Golden Polish. We have already named all but 5 of the chickens which was a lot of fun doing with names like Ginger Rodgers, Lucy, Snow White, Jasmine, Goldie, Cleopatra, Elsa, Anna, Dori, Marilyn Monroe, Mimi, Rose, Sophia Loren, etc..
When I ordered the chickens I built a temporary 7'X7' coop in our conservatory while the big coop/coop run was being built. Unfortunately my community slowed down my coop project by 4 weeks and I have had to keep my chickens in the temporary coop for about 3 weeks longer than I wanted. It is big enough for them, but boy does that stinky poop smell travel through the vents into our laundry room and pool house (my wife is not too happy about that - I am having to use quite a bit of Fabrees to kill the smell - lol). We should finally be able to get them into the main coop within week.
My 16 and 14 year old daughters decided to name the 4 Golden Polish: Angelica, Eliza, Peggy, and Aaron Burr after seeing the musical Hamilton based on 3 of the Golden Polish having similar tale feathers while 1 was a little different and they assumed the three were female. Well it turns out that they had it backwards and the 3 were male and the 1 was female - lol. I now need to find a home for these 3 handsome Golden Polish chickens as our community does not allow Roosters. Are there any members here that live in Southern California that would be interested in them? If not I will see if there is a Rooster rescue place in Southern California.
We have an annual parade in our community that took place last Saturday September 23rd and my father-in-law and I built a small wagon coop and put half of the chickens in it and I pulled it in the parade to make my chicken owning official to all my friends in the community. That was a lot of fun.
Here are a few pics:
FYI: Our last name is Fardad-Finn so we decided to do a play on words for the naming of our mobile hen house - lol.
The chickens are definitely messy and a lot of work, but well worth it. It is so much fun to see their individual personalities develop and I look forward to giving them a happy life and get a lot of delicious eggs in the process.
Best Regards,
Patrick
