Hi there, fowl comrades.
I joined a couple of weeks ago, and though I am just now getting around to introducing myself I’ve already spent hours on the forum combing through the amazing treasure of information and support you’ve got going. I haven’t found the answers to my questions yet but I’m confident I’m in the right place.
l’m a freshly retired oncology nurse who’s now happily at home with two dogs, two cats, two miniature donkey sisters, one remaining goat, a half million honey bees, give or take a few, thirteen almost 4 wk old chicks and one husband who thankfully is not retired.
I’m going to say I’m new at keeping chickens. I’ve had some twice before, years ago in past lives, but I had no idea what I was doing and both times was painfully unsuccessful. I’m much better prepared this time around. Our little flock includes three RI Reds, three speckled Sussex, three partridge rocks, two Crevecoeur (all little girls) plus one lovely Dominique rooster boy (always thought that was “Dominicker” until I learned better from the McMurray catalogue). We have these particular breeds only because of those we felt would do best in our area these are what McMurray had available when we needed to receive them. There are SO many interesting breeds out there! So hard to choose. And then there’s the mystery chick that McMurray slipped into the box.
This little guy (or is she a girl?) was the motivation for googling “chicken forum” and that’s what brought me here. I guess we’ll know soon enough the sex, but I’d really love to know the breed, especially because of what may or may not be abnormalities. I know there’s a section for this sort of gender/breed question and as soon as I figure out the logistics I’ll post a thread there.
Meanwhile, let me just say how much I’ve already enjoyed the forum. It’s been a wellspring of both information and entertainment and I look forward to being a part of such a diverse and esteemed group!
