I am not new to BYC, just finally saw that I could introduce myself. I am a city girl turned small-town farmer. Our family consists of 3 children, one foster baby, 6 dogs, three cats, 5 Rhode Island Red chickens, and 3 Lamacha goats are coming in a few weeks.
During the school year, I teach a self-contained Special Education class of 4th and 5th graders. I started my chicken farm after deciding I really needed to show these kids where eggs and chicken nuggets came from. I bought an incubator and bought some Rhode Island Red eggs from McMurray Hatchery last April. The entire elementary school (including teachers) got into watching the Youtube channel I created to watch the eggs. I had not only students but many staff members come to my classroom wanting to actually see the real chicks that hatched on days 21 and 22.
Here we are 1 year later, at home keeping away from the covid-19 germs the best we can and putting 16 of our own eggs in the incubator.
I love BYC emails and forums! I can always find good advice when an issue arises with the chicks!
