Like many here I'm sure, we started our little flock during the first days of covid lock down. So, we've had our ladies for 3 years now. We have 4 girls left from our original 6. Lost the 1st one, Cloudy, after 2 years to a mystery illness that the vet couldn't help with and lost another one, Shirley, 3 months ago to a hawk attack 😢. They all are beloved and incredibly useful pets, so we continue to try our best to keep them healthy and safe.

We now have 2 red sex links, 1 black sex link, and 1 leghorn. All 3 of these breeds have proven to be good layers, companionable, and generally climate-hardy (hot summer and fairly cold winter.)

I read and researched (especially here) for years before we finally started our flock. I am so grateful for all of the knowledge that others have shared. It helped me to start them out warm, well-fed, and safe (at least until the hawks moved in! 😡) From the moment we got them, our chickens have never ceased to amaze me. They made the first year through covid fly by (ha!) because they were more entertaining than watching TV. Nothing is better than sitting on my porch with a cup of coffee and watching the girls as they flap, ruffle, run, scratch, peck, hunt, preen, race, and a host of other chicken'ish activities.

My other hobbies are cooking, gardening, and reading. I am a stained glass artist. I am very happily married to my 1st love. We have 3 kids. 2 have grown and flown. Our 14 year old daughter, the last one in our nest, is The Chicken Whisperer and can hold and pet even our most cranky girl!
