I was very good. I got chicks, but I didn't name them. They were all straight run and I didn't want to get too attached to anyone I was going to have to get rid of. But now, now I am confident of who is a boy and who is a girl. Of a total of 15 chickens I had a total of 7 roos, and I have managed to re-home all but 1 so far. The last one started to practice crowing yesterday, he sounds like one of those baby dolls that you turn upside down and when you turn them right side up they "cry". I am getting very worried I am going to have to learn to process a roo much earlier than I planned. But that isn't the purpose of this post.

I named my chickens and wanted to introduce them. I was originally going to name them all after women in Sci Fi movies, but that went by the wayside because of the first chicken named because of personality. I preserved one Sci Fi name, the rest of them just came to me. Without further Ado:

The one that ruined my naming theme, an Iowa Blue named Large Marge. I believe she is vying for the Beta position:

A line up in the tractor headed by one of my Barred Rocks - Elvira:

The second Barred Rock and candidate for the Beta hen position - Bathsheba:

My Standard Mostly Buff Cochins - Constance on the left and Temperance on the right:

I believe this is the Alpha - Blue Laced Red Wyandotte - Dr. Beverly Crusher.

Easter Egger #1 - Admiral Grace Hopper. You can see she is almost sitting on the other Easter Egger

The front end of Easter Egger #2 - Amelia Earhart. If I ever have a chicken escape it will be this one, she is an Adventure Chicken! You can see Large Marge behind her - plotting something nefarious.

So there they are. I actually have room for 1 or 2 more but I am going to be very selective. I really need to add some color variation to the flock. I would love, love, love to have an all blue chicken - very light. I think that would make everything pop. A blue Orpington would be perfect because I don't have an Orpington yet. I also initially wanted something from the Sussex line of chickens, I might have a line on a Light Sussex, but that would be one pricey chicken - worth it but pricey.

Any suggestions for a chicken that would bring some needed color to my flock. I am full up with black/goldish/brown/dark red as you can see. But I am open to suggestions. Thanks for looking!

I named one of my bantam blue cochins Amelia, for Ms. Earhart, then shortened it to Amy, and THEN discovered the name had to be Amos. Darned "pullet" was an accidental roo!

Her sister is Ellen (for Degeneres) and she's a nice color - how about a blue Cochin? Of course, you'd probably want a standard, large fowl Cochin. That's what I wanted, but when I misread the Craigslist - totally missing the word "bantam" - and went to the farm and saw the pullets, I bought the two bantams anyway.

Ellen by herself:
