We built this last Memorial Weekend. Took 8 days and about 20 trips to Home Depot. We have raccoons and opossum going through our yard so we wanted it to be secure. The girls free range the backyard when I'm home and go back in the pen when I'm gone and at night. You should hear them squawking to be let out in the morning. Spoiled!

We added two more chickens this year (one turned out to be a rooster

) so we've got four chickens in this coop/pen and that's about the limit of what I feel comfortable with it holding. Don't think I can talk the husband into building something bigger.....yet.

Note the use of wooden wine boxes as nesting boxes. They were free from K and L (thanks Mike!).

Tikka and Masala

They go in the coop on their own and I lock the pen - have a padlock and everything. I took to heart what they say about raccoons!

Husband named Over and Easy and I got to name Tikka and Masala.
I think I'll name the next ones (!) some old fashioned names like Hildegard and Augusta.

I love Tandoori btw that's a great name!

If you lock them in teh pen (not the coop) be careful because raccoons will dig and can comfortable reach through welded wire to kill chickens. Youd be best locking the coop up at night with them in it....especially with a lot of raccoons around. A lot of people lose chickens it what they think are safe coops, better to be safe than sorry.

Very original design, love it.

the coop/pen is actually placed on top of our brick patio. There is some dirt (old flower beds) in a right angle under the coop itself. A coon would have to dig through sunken rocks (we put in) roots of a wisteria and brick to get inside the pen. We were very careful to make it secure as I didn't want to lose my babies!
Probably got up at least 5 times a night to check on them when we first put them out there last year.
