Okay, so I'm new to all this chicken stuff and very excited that I have talked DH into getting some.

(I've wanted them forever!)
We live in Maine; so ordering through the mail right now seems like it's not such a good idea. Still cold. The local feed store won't be ordering until April and the chicks won't arrive until May. After seeing all the baby chick pics...I can't wait until May! I was ready to order them yesterday...but now I'm wondering if I can find some locally.
I've searched a few places and can't find anything. I definitely want chicks, not older birds. But I would also like them laying before September; which is just about where getting them at the feed store leaves me. I'm also not thrilled with the mail order idea because I don't really want roosters and I don't want them to throw more in for warmth. (It was hard enough talking DH into a few!

Any suggestions on finding local chicks?

I am new to this as well ... but I just had the thought of contacting my local 4-H club to see if they knew of who I could talk to about getting some older ones ( I want ones of already laying age ... 6mos-1 year ... to go along with the 5 baby chicks I am getting this week ). I, too, have just talked my husband into letting us ( me and my two young girls ) raise some chickens!!

Aren't husbands funny??!!

Good luck!

jag, The local 4-H is a good start. If there are any Fresh eggs For Sale, signs around your area, stop in and talk to them. It might take a few different stops but alot of people replace chicks from their own hens and would sell a few extras.

Great ideas! There is a guy up the road who has chickens and sells the eggs at the corner store. Maybe I'll have to go visit.

Meantime...I think I'll check out the "Where Am I? Where Are You?" forum; somehow I missed that.

Thanks!

Something I did to find chicks in february was to go to google maps, and type in feed store and the city I was in under the find businesses section. It brought up little family stores and co ops that I didn't even know were in the area. Worth a shot. Good luck finding chicks!

do you have flea markets? We got our first chicks at one. Also try a general search on chickens and main. I found a poultry site for my state that has for sell ads. Crystal
