Hi all,

I got three new chickens at auction today, they were sold just as 'wyandottes' but pretty sure they're gold laced, do you think?

One is older than the other two and was sold seperately. Was wondering if anyone can tell me how old she is and whether she is defo a girl. I'm pretty new to this and don't really know how to tell the sex.

The other two were sold together, but were really cheap (£3 for the pair) so I'm really worried that they're boys and I haven't noticed. Will try to get some better pics tomorrow, but for now, can anyone give their thoughs on my two little ones?

The big one is called crinkle (she came in a crinkle-cut chips box) and the two little ones are winnie and dotty

The chicks are 5 buff orpingtons that my Dad bought, they are super cute!

Hope someone can help!

I think they are bantams... the big one is quite a lot smaller than my ex bats, don't know how old she is or whether she's likely to get any bigger.... do wyandottes come in bantam size?

Anyone able to guess at how old they all are? Only know that the orps are 3 weeks old.. dont know about my ones though.

Yes, Wyandottes come as bantams, and yes, Crinkle is a hen: she looks a lot like my BLRW did at four-and-a-half months. She's probably a GLW but as dark chestnut as she is I suspect she could be a black-phase BLR (which come in black, blue, and splash). I suspect the younger chickens are also hens, but I'm new at this and know Wyandottes in general mature late, so don't bet the farm on me bing right on that part.

Awesome, thanks. Can't help sounding clue-less but whats a black-phase BLR? Any guess at how old any of them are then? Also at what age do wyandottes start laying?
I'm keeping these 3 seperate from my other 3 birds (hybrid, ex battery hens) because I don't want the small ones to get picked on, but want to know when they will be fully grown so I can put them all together.

I'm not very good at summarizing stuff, so I'm linking you to the best explanation I found when I was poking around before I got my BLRWs: http://www.bluelacedred.com/blue%20black%20and%20splash.html

I've
got no idea how old the younger chickens are, but as I said the elder one looks to be at the same level of maturity as my hen was when she was four-and-a-half months.

excellent, that link was really useful thanks. I see what you mean about her being darker than a gold laced. I think part of buying from an auction is that you don't know what you're getting!

Thanks for your help though xx
