So I had to do a rescue! I've been on this website all day searching for an answer as to whether I should assist this chick or not.
She pipped around 10:00 last night. She started to zip around 10:00 this morning but stopped. I watched her all day, but her zip started to look more like spiderweb cracks, I kept the humidity and temp at the manufacture's directions and 9 had hatched with no issues. I noticed the membrane around the zip was starting to turn brown like the inside of the hatched eggs so I came here for answers!
I watch her struggle all day but even her biggest effort barely made to cracks spread. All the other chicks are now fluffy and curious, running all over the bator. Around 6 this evening, she seemed to be getting quieter. Not moving as much. No new cracks. When the other chicks pecked her fuzz she wasn't moving very much. I was starting to really worry.
I decided if she wasn't out by 10:00, I'd get her out. I read all I could find here for the next four hours. Watched a bunch of videos on u tube. 10:00 gets here. None of the remaining eggs have pipped yet. We're good to go. Check the brooder box one last time, put a towel in the dryer, got a cup of warm water (I didn't have coconut oil), and q-tips. Put the towel on the table. We're ready!
I gathered all the chicks and hubby took them to the brooder box while I got the chick. I put her on the warm towel while I dabbed the membrane with water. It was stuck so hard to her lil head. I gently finished the zip line. Then I helped her out, one tiny piece at a time. Her back fuzz was dried to the shell. I wet it a little to soften it and she kind of stretched out of the shell into my hand. There wasn't any yoke or any sign of blood vessels. I cupped her in my hands and got her back in the bator!
Within minutes she was all over the place and announcing to the remaining eggs that she had arrived and she hasn't stopped yet! Seems like as soon as I got the humidity where is should be, another egg pipped.
Thank you Backyard Chickens! I'm sure Lucy would have died if I'd have left her alone.
So y'all cross your fingers for my lil Lucy and the last 7 eggs!
