Hi all! My bantam mix Ash laid her first egg three days ago. I had placed a hard boiled Rhode Island Red egg in the nesting box, hoping she would catch on that this is where to lay. She skipped a day and laid a second one yesterday. My flock free ranges almost an acre all day, so I was nervous that I would have to go on an egg hunt everyday. Should I let the eggs stay in the box to make sure she lays there from now on, or just leave one there? Or take the large brown egg out and leave here two eggs? I just want to make sure she will continue to lay in the box...Thank you!!!

Take them out so you can put them in the fridge and eat them.

If you want to make sure something stays in the nest to remind them where to lay, try adding a golf ball or two. You don't have to worry about those going bad or stinking, and the hen can't accidentally break them and start an egg-eating habit.

Hens are not very smart.

Cool on the eggs! I don't know the answer to your question but thought your chicken was pretty! My first egg came on the same day your first egg did and my rir girl skipped Sunday too!
