first broody hen.. maybe

we are adding on to the coop this weekend.. well finishing the addition this weekend. I think with the cleaning and the new territory.. I will let her out and see what happens. Did she make a nest area for them or just find a secluded place to sleep for the night with chicks?

Actually, what happens is, they decide where they want to sleep and she covers them. Maybe some hens cluck to gather them where the hen wants them, I don't know. I prop open the door of the pen when I let the chicks out, and for a while they would return on their own to the original nest, which is a rather large open top plastic bin. Then she would get in and cover them. So cute to watch. When they changed locations, she just covered them there. When they got bigger and she stopped mothering and returned to the roost, they kept on gathering in their new spot.

I just had my first broody hatch and I have my fingers crossed that another is broody - because I have an incubtor full of eggs and I'd love to let a broody do it for me!

She was on the nest all morning, puffed and wouldn't move so the others can lay (you could almost see them crossing their legs lol) but eventually got up and joined her homies. Keep your fingers crossed for me that she decides to sit!

I have a broody right now a BA that last Thursday noticed was in the nesting box all day with a far away look kind of trance like in her eye. Went out to check her at about 10 at night still there then next morning still there so I knew she was broody. We moved her to a better location but was worried she might abandon the eggs but she didnt. Candled the other night and all are developing she has 7 eggs under her. This is her and my first time at broody. Would be great to have others who have broodies to hatch together they are due to hatch April 14th.
