(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm still fairly new to having chickens. I got my chickens exactly one year ago today! I took over someone else's flock; at the time they were about one year old, so now they're about two. I'm not sure of their hatch dates.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Four. I have the four I started with, despite everything wanting to eat them.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I have three Australorps and one BlackStar.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Observing the chickens is entertaining. They're such busy little creatures that just keep going pretty much no matter what. But, still, they show preferences and emotion. After a large snow storm that stuck around for many days limiting the area the chickens were willing to access, one finally had it and flew into a snowbank. It was comical, but also a bit sad, especially when she seemed to be stuck in the snow and looked to be accepting her fate. (I pulled her out and got her back to the area I'd shoveled for them.)
It's also wonderful to have such delicious eggs that I know come from chickens that have ample opportunities to express their natural behaviors.
Learning about chickens has been interesting and informative. It can also be a little distressing, especially learning about the various afflictions they can experience.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Cooking and baking, road cycling
Building for the chickens has started to take up a lot of my thoughts and time.
Just today--mostly coincidentally, but I've told the chickens it's their anniversary gift--their expanded, covered run was finished. Now they're protected from hawks, but have a pretty good sized area to roam around, scratch for bugs, and sunbathe.
(6) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I can't remember how I found BYC. I joined to be able to better learn from more experienced members. I think specifically I'd been looking at pictures of chicken poop with various intestinal worms, which all looked the same to me. I needed to know what mine had (diagnosed here: tapeworms) so I'd know what treatment to give them. I like looking at pictures of others' coops--I'd like to build a new one someday; mine is solid and safe, but a hassle to clean. Reading about what's happening with other chickens helps me prepare in case the same kind of thing might ever happen with mine.
