I bought 6 little chicks last week and DH and I have been working on a 4x4 coop, since we live in GA, we're making the runner much bigger bc I doubt they will be spending much time in the coop anyway (right now I have 6, but I'm betting that at least 1 is a roo... which will leave me with 4 or 5)

Here is what we have so far.

THIS DOESN'T LOOK GOOD!

PHASE 2: Sides

(The gap you see along the top is for additional ventilation... there is another gap on the back side too)

The plan today is to attach the nesting box, paint the sides, and add a door to the side for me to be able toclean the coop out.

What will you do with the bottom area, is that going to be a run for them?

yes, the bottom ares is going to be part of their run, and their food and water will hang from the bottom of the coop

Looks great! It's similar to ours as it's a 4x4 but yours is higher off the ground. I can't wait until ours is finished.

It's kind of hard just to see the coop in this picture but I'm sure you get the idea.

Thank you Magenta Chick, I have been trying to explain this design to my hubby for a week now I am gonna show him yours!

You may want to make one side and a vent on the opposite side out of hardware cloth (wire mesh) rather than solid, for the air in summer heat. You can always close off part of it for a couple of weeks in winter when it gets really cold. Even in N Ga if you get snow, they will want that fresh air and shady place to go in summer.

Great minds think alike, huh?

This is one of my coops, pretty similar to yours.

Edited to add that you can't see much ventilation in this picture- It is all on the sides and back.
