My chickens are enjoying their first day in the coop, and get along quite well with my Amber Links hens. It's obviously a step up for them, being in the large grassy coop, instead of in the cooped up chick cage. It's Autumn here now, and they are having a ball scratching around in the bright assortments of leaves! Who knows, there might be worms there?
It all started with...
Domino strutted out as confidently as if he'd been there all his life! His sisters were a bit more apprehensive, and stuck close to one another. Then Tilly and Sweet Pea joined Domino, and scratched around at the bottom of my coop, quite contented. Molly and Sophie were a different scenario. They ran up and down along the fence, trying to get back into the paddock where the chick cage is. Of course I thought they were too small to be able to escape, so I sat down in the grass and watched the other three. I suddenly heard a flapping of wings and the sound of chicken feet landing on the tin roof of the coop. I didn't want to believe it was Sophie and Molly. But it was, and there they were, looking down at me with innocent little faces, walking up and down the roof quite contented. They looked so contented that I even for a moment thought of leaving them there. Though common sense soon took over silly thoughts, and I rushed into the next paddock, where their beloved chick cage was. By the time I got there, they had landed, and were frantically trying to get into the cage. I caught them and clipped their wings. They haven't tried to escape since, thank goodness, and seem to have decided they prefer the coop after all!!
