Will one hen lay eggs of two such different shades? Or do I assume I have two separate hens in the game now? Lol! These showed up in a 4 hour time frame in the same box but surely not one hen is laying two that quickly.

Each egg takes around 20 hours to develop inside the hen. There's an article on it here somewhere, with great graphics, but I'm not tech-savvy enough to post a link, sorry. And each hen lays her own unique color egg. Congrats, you have two layers!

I believe just the shelling takes 20 hours, more like 24-26 hours between each egg laid.

You’ve got eggs from two different girls in your picture!

You definitely don’t need laying food to “prep” them for laying. Laying food is for “actively” laying birds only, not molting birds, not young pullets, not males. You don’t NEED to feed laying pellets ever. You could stick with an all flock and offer oyster shell on the side.

Congratulations on your first eggs. My BR pullets started laying over a week ago. The eggs are lovely, brown and small for now. I know they will get bigger. I have been feeding all flock for several months with OS on the side.

Geez...ok so the first egg was not Raven on Wednesday. Her's was the darker on Thursday. I suspect the lighter 2 that I now have are Cooky's. But Raven is proving quite the layer! One a day since she started Thursday! And almost like clockwork lol...she is a 10:30am layer. A very predictable girl for a newbie. Her eggs are so pretty. Perfect and almost brick red in sunlight.
