The first egg has been laid! Thank you Lord! I’ve got two hens and it took 10 weeks 4 days.

Congrats!

When I was raising quail I felt fortunate that they started laying between 7 and 8 weeks.

As far as them laying in succession, if they are the same breed, and I assume they are, barring any unforseen circumstance, I think they should start very close together.

They are coturnix and the pharaoh variety. Both are the same age and were hatched together. I’m excited. I’ve never had animals that actually gave me something to eat lol

I wasn’t sure how long it was going to take. I think time of year really makes a difference. From what others have said the birds need around 13-14 hours of daylight if you don’t supplement light to lay regularly. I also think temperature has something to do with it too. They might have started sooner but I had a rooster that was a little over zealous and probably kept them stressed out. I removed him and 5 days later they laid an egg. I have seen some folks say their birds laid as soon as 6 weeks but from what I’ve gathered is the average is anywhere from 8–10 weeks.

Thanks. I've been looking around for an egg even though it's a few days early from my hen being six weeks.
Now I imagine adding my other four in a few days could do one of two things, relax her because she has company, or stress her out and push her egg laying back a little.

It might stress her some because quail really dislike change… the other day I needed to change their watering dish. I use a 1 quart plastic jar and the screw on base. The first one was grey metal and it started to rust so I switched to a red plastic base. They had a fit for an hour over it being a different color…. But they adapt quickly. If some of your hens already lay eggs maybe it will help coax her to laying sooner than later? I’m new to quail so this is all speculation as far as that goes.
