We have 4 Leghorns & they are about 4mths old. Today, my daughter found our 1st egg. It was cracked & she said our hen, Butters had pecked at it til it broke. It was slightly soft, but well formed. A few hours later, she found another egg, but it was half the size of the 1st one, tan in color & almost rubbery. You can even see through it. We weren't expecting eggs so soon, so they are still on the grower/finisher feed. My questions are..... Is it normal for 1st eggs to come out like this? Could it be because of the food? And could the tan color have anything to do with the fact we had a Sicilian Buttercup rooster that was doing his "job". We are thinking Butters is slightly older than the other 3 & wonder if she laid both eggs in 1 day or could one of the younger ones have laid it. Hence the smaller size & less formation. Also, are hens extremely vocal AFTER they lay their eggs? Butters was out of her bed & socializing, but was extremely vocal for about an hour after my daughter took the egg. We are new to raising chickens & have chosen to do so, because of the fresh eggs. Any advice on keeping our girls healthy & ensuring quality egg production would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Thanks in advance.
