Hey! So my 4 month old Isa laid her first few eggs. Is it normal for new layers to be every other day? She lays early in the morning typically. Yesterday I went out at 7:30am and it was already in the nesting box. But today it’s 8:30 and nothing yet. I’ve been so excited I’m sitting out on my back porch just waiting to catch her actually lay lol. But nothing yet. They are getting plenty of sun as the days are long right now and they are in an outside coop.

I’m so proud of my little Penny girl and wanted to catch her little chicken egg laying song. :celebrate

Yes, new layers are inconsistant with how often they lay. They often lay eggs that are a little wonky too, they need time to get everything in place. Please be patient with her. And not every bird will lay everyday anyways. Most won't actually. A lot will lay 4 or 5 times a week, not 7. They deserve the occasional day off

I was so surprised that her eggs were so strong at first! I wasn’t anticipating it! They are still small little fairy eggs but nice thick shells. I’m such a proud flock momma.

It also takes about 25 hours to form an egg so her laying, when she is consistant, will be later and later every day
I’ve always wondered about this. If it continually gets later and later does that mean eventually they will be laying into the evenings? I thought they mostly laid mornings (before noonish).

I have hens that go in to the nest box so late in the evening to lay, they just stay there overnight.

It depends on the chicken. My old flock didn't lay after 4:00 in the afternoon. My current flock, I have one girl that lays in the evening sometimes. Then she'll take the next day off. Each chicken is an individual

Probably just pullet eggs, they are small at first.
Can take days or weeks or months for them to get to their 'normal size for that bird.

Fairy, fart, wind, rooster eggs are usually from a tiny piece of tissue breaking loose from the reproductive tract, or an immature ova(yolk) and the body forms an egg around it. Color can be darker than 'normal' as the pigment coating released has to cover a much smaller area so is thicker. Can happen with any age layer, but more common with older layers.
