Hi all -

After some nasty predators wiped out my flock last year, I beefed up the run and ordered some Wyandottes from Meyer. Just found our first eggs today - one in the nesting box, and one on the ground in the run (I guess they'll learn).

These chickens were hatched around the first of December, so they're only 4 1/2 months old. Isn't that pretty early for Wyandottes? I'm giving them good food -- no hormones or additives.

That is quite early, just make sure they have grit at all times. Congratulations

I would watch for prolapses and egg bounding, since they're so young they're probably more susceptible to those. I'd check every day a few times, egg bounding is lethal and can kill them within hours. If you do check, I've found it easiest to set them on something about eye level-ish, and just lift their tails. You'll know if it's prolapsed.

Congrats on your eggs, I love Wyandottes.

That's rather extreme.

I guess, I just suggested because we had two chickens die of a prolapse, both had just started laying. But just watch for signs, they probably will be fine, I just figure it's a higher risk for the younger "beginners." Plus just that morning they were fine.
