So I just finished my first hatch. Out of 24 eggs, 4 hatched. Though one died. My fault. It was in the egg for 30 some hours. I tried helping and got the top off and top membrane. When it kicked the bottom of the shell off the vessels connected to the yoke broke and it died. I feel bad, but I know next time to watch for the vessels at the bottom. Maybe give the chick more time to hatch as well.
The other there chicks are Jersey Giants. They are adorable and doing great.
I candled the remaining eggs. Only 1 other egg was full. The air sac looked large enough. It looks like it should have hatched. Hatch day was tuesday. The chicks didn't start hatching until wednesday, and the last chick, the one that died, was friday morning (this morning).
The one full chick I left in the bator. I'll see if it hatches tommorrow. I doubt it. But I might as well wait and see.
All of my Faverolles eggs were infertile. I'll have to get after that rooster. He's real shy and the hens are his boss. Any tips to instill his dominance?
The remaining eggs were all jersey giants and that rooster does his job well. All eggs were fertile. All the eggs were at various stages of development. Many were almost full, probably day 16 or 18. The air sacs looked good and full. Not to large. But from where I saw pips starting from the ones that hatched, they were in range so the chicks wouldn't drown. Not that they actually got to that part. They died before hand.
Temp was between 99.4 to 99.6. ocassionally getting up to 99.9. But I would turn it down a notch.
Humidity from 25 to 45%. Mostly sitting at 35%. Day 18 I turned it up between 65% and 75%. Mostly around 68%. Eggs were put on tray on day 18 for chick positioning.
One egg had the air bubble on its side. Very weird. They eggs were in automatic egg turners. I'm not sure how this happened. There was a developed chick inside, probably around day 12 or 13.
There was very little disturbance to the eggs. Only opened the bator to squirt water in every once in a while. I washed my hands prior to candling the eggs. The bator was cleaned prior to incubation. The only thing I can think is one egg had a bit more poop on it then it probably should have. But it wasn't in contact with any other eggs. Had its own tray.
Any info on why so many eggs, around 14, died prematurely would be very appreciated. The rest were just infertile. **** rooster lol.
