I've been checking this site for a few years now while planning my hobby farm. I had built a small incubator several years ago (the styrofoam cooler type) and nothing hatched. We ordered chicks last June and after a few months of eggs, I decided to hatch some. We homeschool our 4 kids so I thought it would be a good project. I put 86 eggs in an old electric smoker using a light bulb and a temperature controller. I did this exactly 3 weeks before my youngest daughter's birthday party, on purpose . We ended up with about 42 eggs making it to lockdown after learning how to candle (thanks) and deciding some of them were no good (i did keep some a little long before putting them in). I looked up questions about incubating and could always find someone on here who had already asked the same thing. Our first chick hatched right smack in the middle of my daughter's birthday party which was right next to the shed where the incubator is. That was really cool. So far, 30 out of the 42 have hatched! Just wanted to say thanks.
