First Peachick Ever! What color would you guess? [Pics]

So I ordered some hatching eggs online for the fun of it... this is my first time ever hatching peacocks, so I was pretty geeked to try this. Of the eight I ordered, four were no good (3 scrambled by shipping, 1 infertile) but four of them looked to be growing things. This little one is a couple days early... She is supposed to be a silver pied. I actually know very little about colors from birth to maturity, so I'm wondering what you good folks would have to say about her current colors. Is there a way to tell which color schemes will develop later based on the current downy feathers?

I snapped this on my way out to work this morning and I couldn't get her to turn sideways for the life of me, she just wanted to look at me and at the camera. I will try to get a better one when I get home and update. I'm pretty darn excited, no matter what color she turns out to be, because already she's loud and cuddly.

Can those come from a pen of silver pied only? Trying to decide if I should nix the seller and try someplace else.

EDIT: I don't honestly care what color, as I hatched them as pets not breeding stock and I'm just as excited to have any at all hatch, much less the two that did. I'm just asking out of curiosity ^.^

If it is from a pen of all silver pied. Then its a dark pied white eye. if some were SP and other birds then blue split white/pied.

Dark pied and, birds split white look about the same.

things about pieds X Pieds = 25% DP, 50% pied, and 25% whites

DP X whites = 100% pieds

Assuming that the seller knew what she was talking about, she said her silver pied were in a pen with only silver pied and her midnight BS were in a pen by themselves, and then listed a bunch of others that were in a pen together, all her other colors. But who really knows when buying online! It will be exciting watching them grow (them because a second hatched and looks just like the first).

Thank you for the information! This is pretty cool, the genetics of all the colors and patterns is crazy! I am amazed you can keep the results all straight. You said the dark pied and the split white look about the same- how will I be able to tell the difference when they get older? Or will I be able to tell at all?

I haven't gotten any more pictures, but the feathers on their wings are mostly unsheathed now, and the edges of their wings are white feathers. How neat! I was so surprised when they were hatching, to see those huge, sheathed feathers... I've hatched chickens and ducks before and seen quail, pheasant, and seagulls hatch... but I've never seen that before! Just one more thing to be amazed about with these guys.

Yes both DP and birds split white have some white flight feathers.

Breed them to a white, that will let you know for sure which they are.

DP X White = all pied chicks

IB Split white X white = white and ib split.


One of my silver pied pen .First 4 chicks hatch were DP. The % is over a large number.

Your DP will be white eye also. Because all silver pieds are white eyes.

Sometime you just have to believe a seller, sounds like your chicks are DP.

Was the silver pieds all blues ?

Oh, I won't probably be able to breed them to anything, but I will keep that in mind! Maybe my situation will change by the time these guys are breeding age *grin*

She did have a picture of her peacock, and I think it's a blue silver pied, but to be honest when I won the auction I'd only looking into how to hatch/raise/care for them. I hadn't taken much time to look into the endless color combinations because they are ALL beautiful to me. I didn't even know there were different colors of silver pied until a week or so ago.

Whatever color they are, they are going to be spoiled rotten royalty.

I cracked open the two eggs that didn't hatch today... looks like they were silver pieds, they were WAY different in color than the two that hatched, and they matched each other. They were mostly yellow with a little bit of dark color on their backs and their heads. I wonder why 1 color died off and the other lived? They looked fully formed, like they should have hatched- no yolk on the outside even. The lining was still soft to the touch, they were in perfect position.... I was so sad.
