These are all the Jumbo Brown coturnix. I have to say that I'm incredibly impressed at how they're hatching. I picked them up locally--they traveled only 20 minutes between the breeder's house and mine, which is practically like hatching my own eggs! I think I'm up to 14 out now. Pretty cool!
Final count: 30 live chicks. We had one casualty that never completely hatched, even though it had zipped and started to push out of the shell. I'm not sure if it got trampled or if it had fluid in its lungs or what. There were also four that pipped but never zipped and died in their shells. Out of 50 eggs, we had a 60% hatch rate. I'm pretty happy with it.

The way that he was licking at his nose and his lips tells me that there is no way he can ever be left alone with them. It was interesting to see them run right up to him, though, and peck at him through the glass. Obviously, fear of predators has to be learned . . .
