In my whole time in the chicken hobby, I'd never ordered or bought live chicks before and have always hatched my own either from shipped eggs or eggs given to me by friends with flocks. However, I recently made my first ever live chick order because finding the eggs of the breeds I wanted was proving difficult. I ordered 6 chicks from Greenfire Farms: 1 male cream crested legbar, 2 female cream crested legbar, and 3 unsexed Laced Benevelders. All in all I spent $300 on chicks and I've never spent so much on chickens themselves before. They sent me a bunch of extras (received 10 chicks), which worked out because the poor things were treated very poorly by USPS (I did an in office pick up) and when I picked them up their box was completely crushed and I could barely hear them peeping. They did all arrive alive though, but three were incredibly stressed from the beginning and just never perked up even with extra care and died within a couple days. However the remaining 7 are doing wonderfully, growing well, energetic and very healthy and I ended up with: 1 male cream crested legabar, 4 female cream crested legbars, and 2 Laced Benevelders that are leaning toward female. I'm still not sure I'd they were worth $300, but overall I'm happy with my order and the quality of the chicks other than the 3 I lost, but since they sent the extras they made up for the losses and I pretty much got what I ordered. I don't know if I'll ever order chicks that need to be shipped again though after seeing how the post treated them, but I don't blame Greenfield Farm for that. I recieved the chicks March 25th so they're little over a month old now.
