Hi all! We have 4 chickies to start our venture into backyard chickens! A buff orpington, a gold laced wyandotte, a speckled sussex (my favorite one!) and a silver polish. Building our coop this week and hoping they are all hens! Here they are enjoying some grass, our dog seems to be coping well.
Welcome to Backyard chickens. Even friendly dogs sometimes manage to accidentally kill chicks. They are very fragile at this age. Many new members start out by saying their dogs/cats massacred their chickens. Dogs usually see them as squeaky toys, and as soon as one stops squeaking (dead) they grab another. Generally it is best if chickens and dogs never meet. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog. That would make "breaking news,"
If you are in a warm climate, they will need some shade and water until the coop and run are ready for them. Otherwise, chicks are usually put outside after they are fully feathered out.
