Good evening,

I just got through my first round of incubating. I had a pretty good hatch rate of 7 out of 8 with 1 still a possibility. I had the last chick hatch with a lot of blood as she was unzipping. When she hatched she had what looked like a blood clot or placenta at the bottom of the egg. While candling I did see this spot but wasn’t sure what it was. Also it was a blue egg so it was very hard to even candle. Can anyone tell me what this is and why it happened? Chick is on the small side and didn’t hatch until day 24 with a pretty decent size egg yolk still attached.

Thank you for any insight 😊

It's normal for their to be that nasty goopy stuff. Sometimes it is attached to the chick and sometimes it's just stuck in the egg.

Is the yolk absorbing?

I would say well over half absorbed before the little chick ripped it off. It was also still attached to the egg for awhile and dragging the egg shell around. I quickly removed the rowdy ones from the incubator because they were pecking and chasing it lol

Do you have a picture? With it being dragged, stepped on, and pecked at, it can get infected or pull out the chicks innards.

Hopefully you can see picture ok. It has since detached and looks pretty dry to me. I also attached a picture of the yolk sack that had detached.
