As of yesterday I am the proud owner of two 4 week old chicks and I don't have any idea what I'm doing! haha so here is their current set up. We bought the nesting box and small cage already built at a feed store. The more I read it sounds like they'll need a roost. Can that be placed out in the open or does some sort of box protection need to be built. I'd really like to be able to repurpose the cabinet that's in the picture. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

That's a great start! They will definitely want a roosting bar. You may want to consider if there will be any predators, or when winter comes, what you will do to close the coop completely to keep them safe/warm. Don't be surprised if you end up needing way more space than you think, happens to us all the time! :)

If they seem bored in the run, my chickens love when we throw grass clippings, hay, etc. in there for them to scratch and peck through!

We're in Southern California and we have very fair winters and perfect summers so I think that'll give us some time to build something cozier for these two. Since we are in a neighborhood setting there aren't many predators around but I should keep the neighborhood cats in mind. Would a full size chicken hold their own with a cat?

As for the girls, they've been very weary of coming out of the coop just yet. I assume they need to get acclimated and we definitely will expand when the time comes. I'm just trying to figure out what we actually need to make them extra comfy.

Anyone have any ideas on re purposing that cabinet?
