first time with chickens

well this is my first time with chickens and after five years of asking my wife let me get three chicks so off to wilco we go and ask what is a good bird to start with that will lay lots of eggs. they give us three birds and I have no idea what kind they are but they are black and white. There about one month old now and I am working on the coop. I looked at lots of designs and just drafted the blueprints today. It is going to be a 8' by 4' coop with it open on one side and a house on the other with a egg box. I know it's not easy but I have been Reading allot.
