Hello all, My girlfriend and i just got ourselves a coop, two Rhode Island Reds, A Black and a Red Sex Link, a White Leghorn, and a Black Australorp, all hens. Our coop needs roosts and was wondering if a round or square roost would be better? I was also just looking for general pointers. Our Chicks are no more than a month old now. Hope y'all have a good morning/day

Glad to have you join! Feel free to make yourself at home! I've had both and either one is fine, its just up to you.

welcome aboard!

you'll read a lot of recommendations that you use a 2x4 wide side up for a roost. This makes it easier for them to crouch down and cover their feet in cold weather to prevent frostbite. You didn't list your location, that might not be an issue depending on where you are.

I've read as well that chickens really prefer flat instead of round, because they don't like to have to grab onto something. I wasn't sure, so I asked mine, they just cocked their heads and looked at me with one eye like, 'you may be on to something', but that was about all the response I got. So I really can't confirm or deny..........

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X4, a roost that is flat on top like a 2x4, or if you use a round one besure it is rough (natural tree branches are popular).

Thank you. We are in North Idaho. We have purchased a coop pictures soon to follow. We will most likely be going with large rough branches.
:)

When should we move them to a larger brooder or their new coop. It still freezes at night up here.
