Ok so this is my first cold season with chickens. We have a little coop with 6 nesting boxes. We got our first 4 chickens in March and they were laying an egg a day for the most part, we added 5 more chickens a few months ago (they are not laying yet) My older hens are barely laying now...I'm getting 1-2 eggs a day and the Ameracauna hasn't laid an egg for weeks now. Any ideas why?
Will my younger hens start laying even though its cold? They were hatched in July.
Should I heat my coop? Its gets cold where we live but they do go in the coop and cuddle :)
Thanks for any help I really am NEW to this. But loving it!

Welcome to BYC! Most likely your hens aren't laying due to not enough daylight, they need 14 hours a day in order to produce eggs. I don't personally recommend heating your coop due to the danger of a fire, chickens can withstand cold much better than heat. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/423023/why-arent-my-chickens-laying-here-are-your-answers

Seems like many people are confused about the decreased number of eggs this time of year! It is all about time of year and it's natural light schedule. Less light during the day = less eggs! Summer time is when you will get the most eggs.
